About
The AMS has over 60 committees and subcommittees that, together with the AMS staff, help to advance the Society’s mission and implement its programs. For a full list of all active committees and their members during a particular service year, please select the relevant committee roster link below. (Note: The AMS service year runs from November 1 through October 31.)
In addition to its many program and issues committees, the AMS is governed by a Board of Directors and elected advisory Council, which helps determine strategic direction for the Society. To participate in AMS governance, vote in Council or Board elections, or participate in AMS chapter or study group activities, you must be a member of the AMS. Join now!

How to Volunteer
The AMS has about sixty (60) committees and hundreds of volunteers serve on them each year. In order to serve on an AMS Committee, individuals must be members in good standing of the AMS. Committee appointments are typically determined in the summer prior to the start of the official AMS service year on 1 November. To volunteer to serve as an AMS committee member, please complete the form linked below.
(Note: Every effort is made to place volunteers in preferred assignments, but only a third of service posts turn over each year and so we cannot guarantee placement.)
More info about committees and what they do can be found in the AMS Administrative Handbook, which is available on the Policies & Guidelines page. Most committee members serve for three or four years. You may wish to speak with a current committee member about what they do.
For more information about AMS governance and committee service, please contact the AMS Office at ams [at] amsmusicology.org.
Committees FAQs
Yes. To serve on an AMS Committee, individuals must be members in good standing of the AMS.
To volunteer to serve on an AMS Committee, fill out this form.
They vary, from one to four years. For specifics, consult the AMS Handbook, available on our Policies page.
Committee meeting times vary. Contact your committee chair or the AMS Office for more information. To contact the AMS, email us at ams [at] amsmusicology.org.
Committee members are provided with their terms of service when they are recruited to serve. Current Council members will also find their term of service indicated under the Council listing at the top of this page. If you did not receive or cannot remember your term of service, contact the AMS Office at ams [at] amsmusicology.org.
Yes. Council student representatives are eligible to receive up to $650 in reimbursements to attend the Annual Meeting and participate in Council activities. Student representatives, like all Council representatives, are expected to attend Council activities at the AMS Annual Meeting and this reimbursement is provided to subsidize attendance.
Council student representatives interested in a waiver of the Annual Meeting registration fee should apply to serve as an Annual Meeting volunteer. Volunteers are assigned on a first come, first served basis. We cannot guarantee that all who apply will be assigned a volunteer role, so please submit your volunteer request early. Volunteering is a great way to meet other members of the Society and make new friends.
