Periodicals
JAMS: In 1948, the Journal of the American Musicological Society (JAMS) was established, superseding earlier bulletins and papers read at annual meetings. It is published three times a year and contains articles, book reviews, and scholarly communications.
JMHP: In 2010, the Society’s Pedagogy Study Group, citing the traditional omission of pedagogy as a valued scholarly pursuit in American musicology, founded the Journal of Music History Pedagogy (JMHP) as an open-access, online journal devoted to music pedagogy. This journal, officially designated a Society-wide journal in 2020, publishes original research on any aspect of the teaching and learning of music history.
AMS Newsletters: The electronic successor to a print publication begun in 1971, the AMS e-Newsletter is a monthly email publication summarizing the activities and programs of the Society. In August 2022, the Society also introduced a monthly email publication, the AMS Meeting & Events Bulletin, to keep members informed about the Society’s growing roster of events. Together these newsletters are the primary tools for informing members and constituents about AMS programming.
Musicology Now: Begun as a blog in 2013, Musicology Now has evolved into an online scholarly magazine for sounds, words, and ideas. It seeks to engage an educated public about music and sound, and to make academic research accessible to a broader public.
Music Means: Established in 2022 as part of the Many Musics of America project, Music Means explores the complex artistic, social, commercial, political, and material histories of American music by sharing stories from the history of music and sound in America and providing pedagogical materials for educators.
