Robert M. Stevenson Award

The Robert M. Stevenson Award recognizes outstanding scholarship in Iberian and Latin American music. The designation “Iberian music” refers to music composed, performed, created, collected, belonging to, or descended from the musical cultures of Spain and Portugal. “Latin American music” refers to music composed, created, collected, or descended from the musical cultures of all the countries in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The award will be given annually to a book, monograph, edition, or journal article.

The award is named in honor of Robert Murrell Stevenson (1916—2012), longtime faculty member at the University of California at Los Angeles. Stevenson was an expert in Latin American music, particularly the historical record of Spanish, Portuguese and American music. He also wrote extensively on African-American music and the music of the Protestant church in Ameria. Author of nearly 30 book and numerous articles, Stevenson was coordinator of American entries for the Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart supplement and wrote over 300 articles for the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

To be eligible for the Stevenson Award, submissions must meet the following criteria. Eligible works:

• Must be authored by a member of the AMS
• Must have been published during the previous three calendar years (referring to the copyright year as found in the front matter of the published work)
• Must be written in English

Nominations must be received via the AMS Award Nomination by 11:59PM ET on the submission deadline. Self-nominations are welcome, as well as nominations from colleagues and publishers. Nominators are asked to provide a digital review copy of the work, if available.

A committee of three scholars will choose a single award recipient from all eligible candidates. Award winners will receive a monetary prize, a certificate, and recognition at the Annual Meeting of the Society. An individual may receive the Stevenson Award only once. A single work of scholarship may receive only one AMS award.
