About
The Robert M. Stevenson Award honors each year a work of outstanding scholarship in Iberian and Latin American music. The designation “Iberian music” refers to music composed, performed, created, collected, belonging to, or descended from the musical cultures of Spain and Portugal. “Latin American music” refers to music composed, created, collected, or descended from the musical cultures of all the countries in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The award is given annually to a book, monograph, edition, or journal article.
The award is named in honor of Robert Murrell Stevenson (1916-2012), longtime faculty member at the University of California at Los Angeles. Stevenson was an expert in Latin American music, particularly the historical record of Spanish, Portuguese and American music. He also wrote extensively on African-American music and the music of the Protestant church in America. Author of nearly 30 books and numerous articles, Stevenson was coordinator of American entries for the Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart supplement and wrote over 300 articles for the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
