About
The Many Musics of America Project is a landmark event series organized by the American Musicological Society (AMS) to spotlight the richness and diversity of America’s musical traditions as the country approaches its 250th anniversary. Partially funded by grants from the National Writing Project and National Endowment for Humanities, as well as a range of partners and sponsors, events in the series are co-organized by volunteers from the Society’s network of fifteen regional chapters and twenty-two thematic study groups.
Begun in 2022, the Many Musics series includes dozens of events organized throughout United States. Each event explores a thread within the tapestry of American musical traditions, and is often held at a notable or historic venue. For example, the series has explored mission music at Missions National Historical Park in San Antonio, TX; the development of gospel music at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburg; and the place of sea shanties in maritime history at the world-renowned Peabody Essex Museum.
Música y las misiones in South Texas
The history of mission music in South Texas is as rich and diverse as the cultures that have lived and interacted there. In this very special Many Musics event, Adolfo Estrada and Mariachi Nueva Generación introduce new audiences to this amazing musical tradition in a public performance held at the Mission San José Catholic Church, Missions National Historical Park in San Antonio, Texas.
