Call for Articles: Field Notes

The American Musicological Society (AMS) invites proposals for articles to be published in Field Notes, the Society’s online magazine for music studies professionals and educators, published on the AMS Career Center site.

Field Notes curates and aggregates content of interest to music studies professionals and those in adjacent fields: music administration, education, law, performance, business, music production, and more. Readers look to Field Notes for practical resources for skill development, research, and teaching; interviews with authors, editors, and practitioners about their work; reflections from academic and nonacademic music professionals about their career journeys; and roundups of music news in the wider world affecting music studies. Field Notes is editor-reviewed and typically publishes articles of 1,000 words or less (although these may be part of a series or colloquy).

Submissions

If you would like to submit an article idea to Field Notes for possible publication or development, you may do so using this proposal submission form. We are interested in content that appeals to music studies professionals both inside and outside higher education. Written posts are welcome as are pieces that engage multimedia and other formats (recordings, syllabi, compilations of resources, etc.).

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, but we are particularly interested in articles and article ideas that fit one of the following special calls:

1. Career Journeys: Have you had an interesting career journey? Made a recent career change? Are you putting your music or musicology education to an unexpected use? We want to hear about it. Consider submitting a proposal for a “Career Journeys” article to be published in Field Notes that educates readers about your professional trajectory and helps them see new paths and possibilities.
2. US 250th Anniversary: Field Notes is currently publishing and republishing articles that spotlight the complex and fascinating history of music and sound in America as part of its coverage of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Help us tell a well-rounded story of music in America at this historic milestone by pitching or submitting an article on a topic related to the history of music and sound in America. The fall publishing calendar for Field Notes is currently being finalized. To be considered for inclusion in one of these special calls, please submit no later than 31 July 2026.
