About

The AMS Teaching Award will honor an exceptional pedagogical resource for musicology including a published article, book (including textbook), digital medium, online material, other scholarly endeavor, or non-traditional source (e.g. white paper, curriculum, blog, etc.). This resource should best exemplify the highest qualities of originality, theory, application, and communication for teaching and pedagogy in any of the various fields of music as a branch of learning and scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the AMS Teaching Award, submissions must meet the following criteria. Eligible works:

  • Must be authored by a member of the AMS or a citizen/permanent resident of Canada or the United States
  • Must have been published during the previous two years (referring to the copyright year as found in the front matter of the published work. Online and non traditional sources must make clear the year of publication)

Procedures

Nominations must be received via the AMS Award Nomination form by 11:59PM ET on the submission deadline. Self-nominations are welcome, as well as nominations from colleagues and publishers. Nominators are asked to provide a digital review copy of the work, if available.

A committee of three scholars will choose a single award recipient from among all eligible candidates. Award winners will receive a monetary prize, a certificate, and recognition at both the Annual Meeting of the Society. An individual may receive the AMS Teaching Award only once. A work of scholarship may receive only one AMS award.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a publication was published in the “preceding two calendar years”?

Eligibility for the AMS Teaching is determined by the copyright date found on the imprint of a nominated publication. Nominations for online and non-traditional sources must make clear the year of publication. For instance, the 2024 AMS Teaching Award considers works published in 2022 and 2023.

What if I am not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada?

All AMS members are eligible to receive the AMS Teaching Award. If you are not yet a member of the AMS, we invite you to join here.

Can I nominate my own work for consideration?

Self-nomination is encouraged! To nominate your own work for consideration, follow the procedures on the AMS Award Nominations form.
