The American Musicological Society (AMS) is pleased to announce that A-R Editions is the inaugural recipient of the Society’s new Music Interpretation Grants. Music Interpretation Grants provide funding for the production of a work of musical interpretation or analysis by members of the Coalition of Music Organizations. Project: The Shepheardes Calender (1579): Spenser’s Pastoral Set to Music (critical edition)

This Musical Interpretation Grant will support the publication of an edition of musical settings for Edmund Spenser’s The Shepheardes Calender (1579), a project by Ross Duffin that demonstrates the essential role of hypothesis and conjecture, hand in hand with analysis and interpretation, in researching the poetry of Edmund Spencer and any potential musical settings for his lyrics. This innovative critical edition is intended for a multidisciplinary audience and should garner response and discussion not only in musicology but also among scholars of Spenser and of sixteenth-century English poetry and literature more broadly.
