Increased Aid for Independent Scholars

The AMS is pleased to announce increased financial support for authors publishing in the AMS Studies in Music series (Oxford University Press).  Currently, each book automatically receives a $3,000 publication subvention. However, in the future authors who are contingent faculty, independent scholars, or another type of professional whose research activities is not remunerated as part of their paid employment will be eligible to receive an extra $2,000 in subvention support, for a total of $5,000. In either case, funds will primarily available to reimburse direct publication costs, as is typically the case with AMS publication subventions (e.g., costs related to illustrations, musical examples, permissions, indexing, copyediting, etc.).

The AMS Studies series promotes outstanding and innovative musicological scholarship drawn from the widest possible range of perspectives and areas of inquiry that will appeal to a broad scholarly audience. AMS members receive a 30% discount on AMS Studies volumes. Recent titles include Mark Evan bonds, Music’s Fourth Wall and the Rise of Reflective Listening (2025); Matthew Gelbart, Musical Genre and Romantic Ideology: Belonging in the Age of Originality (2022); Emily Zazulia, Where Sight Meets Sound: The Poetics of Late-Medieval Music Writing (2021); and more.
