      1. Committee on Career-Related Issues
      2. By-Law definition: [n. a.] Coordination with Committee on Membership and Professional Development.

        Charge: The committee considers, as necessary, a range of matters that can be defined as career-related, including non-academic professions and such academic matters as initial employment (and interviews), the teaching of musicology, discrimination, tenure, harassment, retirement, post-retirement, and special concerns of students and unaffiliated scholars.


        Constitution: rotation of members. Unspecified number of members [currently nine, several of whom may be from outside academia, plus two student members, who should be selected from the membership of the Student Representatives to Council.] The regular members serve three-year overlapping terms; the student members serve two-year overlapping terms. The term and rotation of the chair are indefinite.

        Timetable: The committee regularly sponsors at least three open forums during the Annual Meeting and also meets privately during the Meeting.

        Other Concerns: The committee makes an effort to be responsive to current career-related issues, especially as communicated to it by AMS members.

      3. Committee on Cultural Diversity
      4. By-Law definition: [n. a.] Coordination with Committee on Membership and Professional Development.

        Charge: To ensure the vitality of musicology by encouraging participation by groups historically under-represented in the discipline, including, though not limited to: African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans/Latinos, and Native-Americans; to broaden and, indeed, raise the level of intellectual discourse in the field through a more inclusive representation of personal and intellectual perspectives.

        Guidelines: Toward the end of assisting the committee in the fulfillment of its charge, the Society established the Eileen Southern Travel Fund (ESTF) awards in 1995, which are administered by the committee, and are intended to expose selected minority undergraduates and terminal masters degree candidates to various aspects of the field at the Annual Meeting of the Society. For guidelines and other information pertinent to the administration of the ESTF awards, see:; a detailed protocol for this award was developed by Richard Agee in 2002, of which a summary given below. The committee also launched the Alliance for Minority Participation in Musicology, a graduate fellowship consortium intended to increase the number of minority students who enroll in and complete graduate programs in musicology.         Constitution: rotation of members. Normally two co-chairs and six other members, plus two student members. The co-chairs and regular members serve overlapping three-year terms; the two student members serve overlapping two-year terms. The student members should be selected from the membership of the Student Representatives to Council.

        Timetable: The committee normally meets during the Annual Meeting; it periodically organizes special open sessions at the Annual Meeting.

        Other Concerns: In general, the committee is concerned with (1) broadening the topics dealt with at AMS chapter and Annual Meetings; (2) devising a networking system for minority-group scholars and a mentoring system for minority-group students; (3) encouraging links between the AMS and committees on minority-group issues of other organizations, as well as organizations devoted to minority-group musicians and scholars; and (4) reaching out to music students in historically African-American collegiate institutions and urban institutions with large minority-group populations.
