SUMMARY:Amy Beach: Path-Breaking American Musician
DESCRIPTION:In this AMS/Library of Congress Lecture\, E. Douglas Bomberger gives a talk on a major figure in American music\, the remarkable composer and pianist Amy Beach (1867–1944). Beach was the earliest American female composer whose works are still regularly heard today\, on the radio\, concerts and streaming platforms. Beach’s Mass in E-flat major and her Gaelic Symphony were premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the 1890’s\, to acclaim by both critics and audiences. The Library of Congress holds the manuscript of both those orchestral works along with several others in the A.P. Schmidt Company Archives. Beach’s long and eminently successful career included a number of European tours\, and performances of her piano concertos in which she was the soloist. \nThis event is free\, but tickets are required. \nReserve Tickets \n

DESCRIPTION:In summer 2026\, the American Musicological Society (AMS) will host a two-week residential Institute for Higher Education Faculty entitled Studying Early Music with Computers: Tools\, Formats\, and Strategies at New York University\, 14–26 June 2026. This institute will apply insights from recent scholarship in humanistic music studies (musicology\, music theory\, music analysis\, etc.) and digital humanities to organize an innovative program for the machine-assisted study of medieval\, Renaissance\, and Baroque Music. It will bring together an interdisciplinary group of leading scholars and teachers engaged in using computers to do research on music history and theory and who are interested in involving students in their projects. \nStudying Early Music with Computers: Tools\, Formats\, and Strategies will provide support for thirty (30) participants and consist primarily of practitioner workshops and seminars on specific tools\, formats\, and machine-assisted investigative strategies. Through both expert talks and interactive workshops\, participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to advance their own research and teaching\, including detailed explorations of the technical\, infrastructural\, and funding requirements necessary for conceiving\, developing\, deploying\, and maintaining digital humanities projects and programs for the study of early music (c. 1000–1750 CE). Each participant will receive a stipend of $2200 to support attendance and travel\, as well as access to reduced-rate NYU dorm accommodations. The 2026 AMS summer institute will be co-directed by Julie E. Cumming and Richard Freedman\, and will feature workshops and seminars facilitated by Megan Kaes Long\, Chris White\, Reba Wissner\, Jennifer Bain\, Karen Desmond\, Ichiro Fujinaga\, Debra Lacoste\, Cory McKay\, Emiliano Ricciardi\, Craig Sapp\, and Martha Thomae. The institute website and instructions on how to apply will be made available on 8 December 2025.
